More on Geo-Tagging/Location-Based Social Media

Here’s another great article from the Mashable website on geo-tagging/location-based social media:

5 Things You Need to Know About Location-Based Social Media
by Kevin Nakao

Kevin Nakao is VP of Mobile & Business Search for WhitePages, a Top 40 Web and Mobile Publisher. You can find him on Twitter, and on the Whitepages Blog where he writes about mobile, local, and social media.

While last year’s SXSW seemed to serve as the “coming out” party for location-based services (LBS), maybe this year’s conference signifies the migration of these platforms into mainstream culture. And perhaps the only real “new” concept to emerge this year is the idea that there is finally a real opportunity to make money via “location.”

FMPR Scholarship

In the next few months, teenagers from all over Kaua’i will be receiving acceptance letters from colleges and their parents will begin preparing to have empty nests.  It will be an exciting time for many, and for some, a time of apprehension.  Students will wonder what the new school year at college brings for them in terms of academic challenges and social situations.  Parents will wonder how they will pay tuitions, especially in this challenging economy.  But still, those who have the opportunity to pursue higher education will find a way.  Fujita & Miura Public Relations would like to join those families investing in education by awarding one $1,000 scholarship to a Kaua’i student pursuing their bachelor’s degree or a graduate degree. Geotagging to Market Your Business

Geotagging is looking to become a strong player in marketing. What is Geotagging, you ask?  Here’s Wikipedia’s definition: “Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as photographs, video, websites, or RSS feeds and is a form of geospatial metadata. These data usually consist of latitude and longitude coordinates, though they can also include altitude, bearing, accuracy data, and place names.”  More commonly, you might be familiar with geotagging from popular apps like Foursquare or Gowalla.  Here are a couple good articles on the geotagging marketing and how businesses are maximizing this trend:

With over 8.5 billion web pages on the internet and growing by 250,000 new pages per day, you may be wondering how your website will be found by potential customers in this sea of information. No matter how you plan to publicize or market your website offline, it is likely that you will need to rely on search engine traffic to help drive targeted customers to your web site. Search engine optimization (SEO) is necessary to ensure that your site can be found.

Search Engine Optimization is the process of making your website as visible as it can be to the search engines and ultimately to your customers. Public Relations Cares

According to “Nuts! Southwest Airlines’ Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success,” “In 1989, when the San Francisco Bay area experienced a terrible earthquake, Gary Holloway, then a Southwest employee in Phoenix, thought of a way to help the victims.  He called an ABC television affiliate in Phoenix and asked newscasters to tell viewers to take blankets, clothes, and canned food to the Southwest terminal at Sky Harbor Airport…The outpouring from Phoenix and other Southwest cities was so strong that, when it was all over, Southwest Airlines had flown in more supplies to relieve the victims than anyone else, including the American Red Cross!” Read the rest of this entry »

Tropic Topics – Jan. 28, 2010

Even if our ‘From Hawaii With Love’ radio show is on break, we can’t resist dishing on Tropic Topics, the hottest topics in the Tropics.

Ukulele Steams Ahead with Train
One of Hawaii’s favorite instruments, the ukulele, has been making a more mainstream appearance outside of the Aloha State recently. With Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz strumming the ukulele along with their chart topping melodies, the ukulele has become an “it” sound in recent years. The ukulele’s most recent hit is Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister,” which has been climbing the Billboard charts since its debut last year. This week, it jumped from 23 to 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Train’s Pat Monahan said that the ukulele “made the song sound right.  When it was written … it [had] all the traditional rock instruments. Then a ukulele was brought out and changed the environment completely. When Jimmy plays all instruments, it’s really easy for me to sing to, but man when he’s playing the ukulele, I melt. I do. I melt.”  Now, that’s how hot this Tropic Topic is! Read the rest of this entry »
