Are engaged in entrepreneurial activities.

Have the intention to come home to and pursue their livelihoods in their hometowns after undergraduate or graduate school.

Are engaged in community service and wish to advance their local community after college.

Have proven intellectual and academic achievements.

We are looking forward to learning about applicants’ aspirations and plans for the future; about how they plan to make an effective contribution to the world around them; and how they will blend their intellectual talents and concern for others to play an influential role in the betterment of society, wherever their careers might take them.

When we award our Fujita & Miura Public Relations Scholarships it will be our honor and privilege to wish those students well as they head off to college, and to demonstrate our great optimism for the future of our youth.

Since then, we’ve kept in regular contact with our FMPR Scholars and have connected them with each other in a scholar network. We continue to be so impressed with their achievements that we’ve presented an additional $500 scholarship to each of them this year as they pursue their respective goals.

Benjie Baclig has begun his third year at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. This summer, he interned at Barclays Capital in New York. Shyanne Matsumoto will soon begin her second year at Oregon State University double majoring in education and chemistry. She completed her previous semester with a 4.0 GPA. Shelcie Takenouchi graduated from USC with a master’s degree in public relations in May. She is currently working as a PR associate at Hill & Knowlton in Los Angeles.

Matsumoto of Kalaheo is a graduating senior at Kaua`i High School with a 3.651 grade point average (GPA). She has been accepted to Oregon State University where she will pursue a double major in secondary education and chemistry. Outside of school, Matsumoto has been an active volunteer and an effective leader.

“I have always had a passion for working with our island keiki, and recognize the need for quality teachers on our island, especially in upper-level math and science classes in our high schools,” says Matsumoto. “I also have a growing interest in the science and health areas, so upon graduating with both undergraduate degrees, I will either come home to teach or go on for further schooling to pursue a career in the medical field. The path I take to college may not always be free and clear, nor the goals I seek fast and easy, but where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

“We are so pleased to invest in this extraordinary young woman,” said Jenny Fujita, partner with FMPR. “She will make enormous contributions to the world around her, and to Kaua`i in particular.”

“Wherever her career takes her, we know she’ll blend her intellectual talents and concern for others to play an influential role in the betterment of society,” said Koerte. “To that end, we have asked Shyanne to send us end-of-semester updates about her progress. We will be posting these updates on our website at www.fmpr.net and eventually, plan to have a network of FMPR Scholars that can collaborate and achieve great things for themselves and our island.”

FMPR Scholars are chosen based on several key criteria: they are Kaua`i residents and students who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees, preferably in communications or public relations; are interested in owning or working for a small business and/or home-based business; engaged in entrepreneurial activities; intend to come home to and pursue their livelihoods on Kaua`i after undergraduate or graduate school; are engaged in community service and wish to advance the Kaua`i community after college; have proven intellectual and academic achievements; show integrity of character and an interest in helping others; have the ability to lead and the motivation to use their talents to the fullest.

This year we had the distinct honor to award scholarships to two deserving and extraordinary recipients, Benjie Baclig and Shelcie Takenouchi. Shelcie is in Southern California, where she will attend USC to pursue a master of arts degree in strategic public relations. Benjie just graduated as the valedictorian from Waimea High School on Kaua’i's Westside so we were able to take him and his family to breakfast to meet him and learn what fired his ambition to be great.

When he walked into Poipu Bay Golf Course Clubhouse, all the workers there knew Benjie. He has received many scholarships locally so he has been in the newspaper a lot, and he was accepted to The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In fact, he is the only Hawai’i student going to Penn from a public school.

Benjie comes from humble beginnings. He lives in Kaumakani, Kauai, an old plantation camp. His parents moved their family to Kauai from the Philippines in 1992. Neither of his parents speak English well, as Benjie’s mom pointed out to us. He is from a loving family and spiritually grounded in his church. It is obvious that Mom and Dad have been key to his success and are proud of what he has achieved. He’s interested in international business and has a Scottrade account.

Lesson #1: Think Big
When we asked Benjie what set him apart, he said, “I think big. I only have one life to live. I have to make it big.” Such a simple concept, thinking big, and yet so few of us do it. We too often set expectations, which we label “realistic” as we have long lists of “yeah buts” that run through our heads that give reason why we are unable to achieve at the highest levels. Benjie has none of that. If he did, he would not be going to Wharton, which only has a 10% acceptance rate. If he did, he would not aspire to do his graduate work at Harvard University or to eventually hold the post as the Federal Reserve Chairman. He thinks big…really BIG. Why not? What’s the alternative?

Lesson #2: Knowledge is Power
It was also immediately apparent to us that Benjie loves to learn. His thirst for knowledge is great, and if there’s something he wants to know, he takes the steps to get the answer. He told us that as a high school freshman, he set out to be the valedictorian of his class and attend an Ivy League school (and look what happened!). To assist him with achieving these goals, he read books to teach himself how to gain success and get accepted to an Ivy League university. Benjie’s mom says that he’s always got a book in hand…even at parties.

Lesson #3: Stay Focused and Work Hard
Yes, you read that right, Benjie sometimes has a book on hand at parties. Benjie said that he often uses the down times at family gatherings to read. This is part of Benjie’s unwavering focus on achieving his goals. Not only does he work hard at academics, but also in every aspect of his life. He is an active volunteer and leader with numerous organizations, and worked at Lappert’s Ice Cream in high school, sometimes up to thirty hours per week.

Lesson #4: Go Get ‘Em!
Benjie has an attitude that is positive and full of momentum. Going back to Lesson #2, Benjie is not afraid to seek out information, no matter where he has to go to find it. Along this line and because he felt that he needed help with public speaking, Benjie joined Toastmasters International, an organization that helps people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. Toastmasters’ meetings usually consist of a group of 20 people that that learn and practice these skills. We don’t know many adults who would have the courage to join Toastmasters to improve their public speaking, and were impressed by this teenager’s “Go Get ‘Em” attitude and fearless efforts to better himself.

Benjie is eager to learn and full of hope and wonder and faith. And, he works hard and constantly. He has big dreams and he puts in his time to make them come true. Those are our lessons from Benjie. Worth learning, for sure.

As with many things, the answer came when we looked inward. Our favorite gifts were almost always things that someone had made for us or grown in their own yards. You know, those ethereal almond cookies from your friend or sewn potholders from Aunty so and so or juicy lychee from your uncle’s yard. So, we followed suit and started giving things that we make or grow. Recently, we’ve given homemade ice cream to our banker and CPA, garden harvests to each other and family members, and homemade marshmallows to friends for Easter.

Homemade and homegrown items are special when received because they’re unique; they cannot be reproduced by anyone else; they take time, effort and consideration to make or grow; and they come from the heart. In most cases, they’re also extremely economical, which is a plus in today’s economy. The benefits of giving homemade and homegrown are endless. (Please note that here on Kauai, homemade food items cannot be brought to public schools and served to children unless they are made in a certified kitchen.)

Gift giving is a direct extension of public relations because it communicates a multitude of positive feelings such as thanks, compassion, empathy, celebration, reciprocity, support and so on. The actual gift and its significance to the recipient convey to this individual how much the giver values their relationship.

Next time you need to show some appreciation for someone, whether a contractor, friend, vendor, family member, customer, or employee, try giving them something that you’ve made or grown with your own hands. Rare fruit, organic greens, mango bread, salad dressing, tropical flowers, handmade crafts, whatever. Put it in a lovely vessel and include a handwritten, heartfelt note. We guarantee it will be received with smiles and thanks.

So, you know how to write a press release, but how do you communicate more general information about your business, product or service? A fact sheet, also referred to as white paper, information paper, or information sheet, is your answer. A fact sheet is an important, at-a-glance tool used in public relations to provide an overall view of your business. Though fact sheets can stand alone, they are more commonly used to supplement a news release or website, anchor a press kit, or replace a brochure.

A fact sheet is generally one or two pages and includes the who, what, when, where, why and how about a business. Components of a fact sheet include the below. Click here for a fact sheet template.

Your business name, address, phone number, and website address should be on the upper left. If using company letterhead, disregard this step.

A contact name, title, phone number, and email address should be on the upper right.

Triple space down and type the name of the subject. This should be centered and in upper case.

Double space down and type “Fact Sheet,” which should also be centered.

The body of the fact sheet is set up in two columns. The left side includes the headings, such as history, vision, mission, purpose, future, etc., all in upper case lettering. The right side contains the heading descriptions. The descriptions should consist of short sentences that align under the second column.

If the document is longer than one page, type “-more-” at the center of the bottom of the first page.

At the end of the fact sheet, “###” should be centered and inserted.

Finally, double space down and type the month and year, flush right.

Once you have a completed fact sheet, create a clear and specific distribution plan so you can ensure that your target publics receive the information. Begin with deciding which publics you want to receive the items and the best way to get them into their hands. For example, you may want to include the fact sheet in new customer mailings, emails, and on your website.

For more detailed instructions on creating and customizing your fact sheet, purchase our topic- and industry-specific fact sheet templates, and customize them for your business. Every fact sheet template includes a pre-set, detailed format and valuable tips for your industry or topic. Templates available include crisis, event, non-profit, polictical candidate, product or service, restaurant, and retail

In the next few months, teenagers from all over Kaua’i will be receiving acceptance letters from colleges and their parents will begin preparing to have empty nests. It will be an exciting time for many, and for some, a time of apprehension. Students will wonder what the new school year at college brings for them in terms of academic challenges and social situations. Parents will wonder how they will pay tuitions, especially in this challenging economy. But still, those who have the opportunity to pursue higher education will find a way. Fujita & Miura Public Relations would like to join those families investing in education by awarding one $1,000 scholarship to a Kaua’i student pursuing their bachelor’s degree or a graduate degree.

The selection of FMPR Scholars is based upon Kaua’i residents and students who:

Are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees, preferably in communications or public relations.

Are interested in owning or working for a small business and/or home-based business.

Are engaged in entrepreneurial activities.

Have the intention to come home to and pursue their livelihoods on Kaua’i after undergraduate or graduate school.

Are engaged in community service and wish to advance the Kaua’i community after college.

Have proven intellectual and academic achievements.

Show integrity of character and an interest in helping others.

Have the ability to lead and the motivation to use their talents to the fullest.

Click here for an application as well as detailed instructions. Completed applications are due by April 30, 2010, and the FMPR Scholar for 2009 will be announced on June 1, 2010.

We are looking forward to learning about applicants’ aspirations and plans for the future; about how they plan to make an effective contribution to the world around them, and to Kaua’i in particular; and how they will blend their intellectual talents and concern for others to play an influential role in the betterment of society, wherever their careers might take them.

When we award our first Fujita & Miura Public Relations Scholarship it will be our honor and privilege to wish that student well as they head off to college, and to demonstrate our great optimism for the future of our youth and our island.
