In the upcoming episode of “From Hawaii With Love,” to air at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, Oct. 15 on The VoiceAmerica Talk Radio Network Variety Channel, listeners will meet Hilo, Hawaii’s very own BJ “The Prodigy” Penn. Listeners will hear about Penn’s life as the second MMA fighter to win UFC titles in two weight divisions, welterweight and lightweight, and as the first American-born winner of the World Jiu Jitsu Championship.
Penn will also talk about how he’s preparing to defend his lightweight title against Diego Sanchez at UFC 107 on Dec. 12 and discuss his upcoming projects, and how his Hawaii upbringing has influenced his success. Penn will play “Hawaii 5-Go,” a speed round of five fun questions, and answer the question Koerte and Fujita ask all of their guests: what’s the best lesson Hawaii can teach the world?
UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn was raised on the Big Island of Hawaii. Nicknamed The Prodigy, Penn earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and became the first American-born winner of the World Jiu Jitsu Championship in the black-belt category after only three years of training. He’s only the second fighter to win Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) titles in different weight classes.
Most recently, Penn successfully defended his lightweight title against Kenny Florian in UFC 101. On Dec. 12 at UFC 107, Penn will fight Diego Sanchez for the UFC Lightweight Championship.
Penn was a coach on Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter 5” reality TV show. He also appeared in the film “Never Surrender,” and is the co-author of “Mixed Martial Arts: The Book of Knowledge,” an instructional book on MMA fighting.
